Installation Instructions — Linux

CAT is an add-on feature for CAVE. It needs to be installed separately on each workstation.
You'll need to reinstall after each AWIPS II version update.

Please note: The installation should be run as root.

  1. If needed, create a directory to save the feature file. For example,
    mkdir /localapps/install/annotation_tool
  2. Download the repository file to this directory
    cd /localapps/install/annotation_tool
Select the appropriate version, and download using the Executable link above.
  3. Rename the file to remove the version-specific tag
    mv gov.noaa.gsd.viz.drawing.feature.17.3.1.zip gov.noaa.gsd.viz.drawing.feature.zip
  4. Install the CAT feature
    /awips2/cave/caveInstall.sh <your install directory> gov.noaa.gsd.viz.drawing.feature
This may appear to hang, but may take two to three minutes to complete.
  5. Set ownership
    chown -R awips:fxalpha /awips2/cave/plugins/gov.noaa.gsd.viz.draw*

When you start CAVE, you'll see an Annotate addition on the menu bar.

Installation Instructions — Windows

~ NEW ~

These instructions are for installing a CAVE feature such as the CAVE Annotation Tool (CAT) on Windows. These instructions require you to have administrator privileges in order to run the Command Prompt (cmd.exe) and WordPad in administrator mode.

--- Running commands on Windows 10 as administrator:
  1. To start the Command Prompt in administrator mode (Windows 10):
    • Type cmd in the Windows 10 search (Cortana) text field entry in lower-left of desktop
    • Notice that a popup menu automatically displays and shows the application name Command Prompt.
    • Right-click on the Command Prompt menu item and select the Run As administrator menu entry
  2. To start the WordPad in administrator mode (Windows 10):
    • Type wordpad in the Windows 10 search (Cortana) text field entry in lower-left of desktop
    • Notice that a popup menu automatically displays and shows the application name WordPad.
    • Right-click on the WordPad menu item and select the Run As administrator menu entry

--- Install the CAT Feature on Windows:
  1. Download the CAT zip file to a temporary location.
  2. Remove the -alertviz argument from config.ini:
    1. Run wordpad as administrator (see instructions above)
    2. Open the file C:\Program Files\Raytheon\AWIPS II\CAVE\config.ini
    3. Remove the line that contains -alertviz
    4. Notice the location in the file where you removed this line and keep this file opened as you will be replacing this line after the feature install.
  3. Prepare the feature file:
    • unzip the CAT zip file into a temporary directory
    • for this example:
      • create a directory called C:\myFeatureRepo
      • unzip the contents of the the CAT zip file file into C:\myFeatureRepo
    • notice in the feature installation command example below that path is required for the -repository flag.
  4. Install the feature:
    • start Command Prompt as administrator (see instructions above):
      • run the cave.exe command generally described in the following Example.
  5. Put back the -alertviz argument in the cave.ini file.
    • In WordPad, replace the line with the -alertviz (might just be able to do a Ctrl-Z).
    • If you forget to do this CAVE will require a separately running instance of Alertviz.
  6. Start CAVE normally.

-- Example:
$"C:\Program Files\Raytheon\AWIPS II\CAVE\cave.exe" -vm "C:\Program Files\Raytheon\AWIPS II\Java\bin\java.exe" -nosplash -application org.eclipse.equinox.p2.director -destination "C:\Program Files\Raytheon\AWIPS II\CAVE" -i gov.noaa.gsd.viz.drawing.feature.feature.group -repository file:/C:\myFeatureRepo
...
Installing gov.noaa.gsd.viz.drawing.feature.feature.group 1.0.0.xxxxxxxxxxxx.
